Most newer FCA vehicles have a Security Gateway Module (SGM) between the main diagnostic port and the vehicle’s internal networks. This module limits what a scanner can see or do unless the tool is “trusted” by the OEM network.
-
The 12+8 adapter physically connects to two factory service connectors on the car (one 12-pin and one 8-pin plug) that are ahead of the SGM.
-
By routing these direct signals to your normal 16-pin OBD2 lead, your Autel tool can fully communicate with the vehicle — meaning you can diagnose modules, run active tests, read/clear codes, do service functions, and in some cases perform programming/coding functions.
What This Enables on Chrysler FCA Vehicles
-
Full ECU communication without “Device unable to communicate” errors.
-
Complete system diagnostics on engine, ABS, BCM, etc.
-
Active tests and service procedures instead of only reading basic codes.
-
Key programming and immobilizer access when used with compatible Autel tools (like IM608 PRO / IM508) and software packages.

Description
-
These cables are used to bypass the secure gateway module (SGM) on 2018-newer Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/FCA vehicles, which otherwise blocks some diagnostic functions.
-
They typically connect the 12-pin + 8-pin gateway harness directly to your diagnostic tool’s OBD2 port.
-
Ensure the cable you buy is compatible with your specific scanner model and vehicle year before purchasing.
Chrysler 12+8 cable adapter is a special diagnostic bypass cable used with compatible automotive scan tools. It’s designed specifically for vehicles from FCA/Stellantis (Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Fiat, Alfa Romeo) that were built from around 2018 onward and include a Security Gateway Module (SGM).
These vehicles use a security system that blocks most aftermarket scan tools from fully communicating with the car’s electronic control units (ECUs) through the normal OBD2 port. The adapter lets your scanner bypass that security gateway and talk directly with the vehicle’s systems.
